Hawth's tools is an ArcGIS extension that has many very helpful tools for rangeland assessment, inventory, and monitoring. Perhaps, most helpful for AIM is Hawth's tools point generation or sampling tools. Hawth's tools gives an easy interface for many tasks usually associated with field sample design such as: generating random or systematic points, stratifying these points by other GIS layers, sampling at a specified density (i.e., so many points per unit area), creating standard grids, and making random selections from point/line/polygon layers. Hawth's tools are free to download and use.
